| Since 1991, Hemp Basics and Hemp Supply have been at the forefront of the re-emergence of hemp as a viable commerical product that has not yet realized its full potential - despite having been in continuous use by mankind for over 6,000 years. We are constantly working to bring new wholesale and retail hemp products to market in an ecologically and socially responsible manner. Our company is working for a sustainable future by offering these natural alternative earth-friendly hemp textiles, bags, accessories, twine, cordage and rope from hemp fiber grown and produced responsibly and locally manufactured in adherenace to fair-trade practices and principles.
People the world over have known for thousands of years the value of the Hemp (Cannibis Sativa) plant, and have used it for everything from cordage and textiles to foodstuffs. Effectively banned in America by the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, this sustainable crop enjoyed a brief resurgence during World War II when the Federal government promoted the reintroduction of hemp to American farmers through its "Hemp for Victory" campaign. Since the end of that war, hemp has been supplanted by various petrochemical products as the raw material of choice for many products thereby contributing to the steady deterioration of the global environment that has occured during this same period. An unintended victim of America\'s "War on Drugs", this misunderstood cousin of the marijuana plant has continued to be cultivated in countries throughout Europe and Asia where it has remained not only a vital raw material for thousands of products, but has become an integral part of environmentally responsible and sustainable agriculture programs.
The Romanian hemp fabrics below are manufactured from 100% water-retted hemp fiber - an all natural biological process used to extract the hemp fiber from the stalk of the plant. The hemp is grown without herbicides and pesticides using responsible hemp cultivation and processing methods that have remained unchanged for generations. As with all natural fabrics, the natural color of the fiber can vary from time to time because of, among other things, the weather during cultivation and retting. These variations in color and structure of the yarns and fabrics are characteristic of these truly natural fabrics giving them their timeless beauty and style. You will find these natural fabrics suitable for a variety of uses, including for home furnishing items and various garments. The hemp used in the production of our Chinese hemp fabrics, is grown in the central mountainous regions of China with a history of hemp cultivation dating back more than 1,000 years. It is grown and processed in a manner very much like in Romania – the stalks are water- retted in small basins fed by mountain rivers. After soaking, the stalks are stacked and dried and made ready for “skinning” where the fibrous bark is peeled away from the stalk. After sorting, the fiber is sold to the spinning mills where the bundles of fiber are cooked in caustic soda to breakdown the pectin and lignin binding the fibers together. After this cooking process, the fibers are washed and separated by mechanical processing. The resulting fibers are sorted with longer fibers used to make 100% hemp yarns and the shorter fibers blended with other materials, like, cotton, wool and silk and spun into yarns. The yarns made from these hemp fibers are much lighter and more uniform in color then the European yarns. Although the natural taupe color of hemp is lost in this process, the fabrics made from these yarns offer a wider, and as beautiful, range of hemp fabrics. Below you will find our current fabric collection. Please follow the category links below to search our various types, styles and colors of hemp fabrics which have been categorized for your convenience.

The essential fatty acids (EFA's) contained in hemp seed oil are required in our diet more than any other vitamin, yet our bodies do not naturally produce them. They must be obtained from external sources in the foods we eat. EFA's are involved in every metabolic function of the human body, without them life is not possible. They are called "Essential" because they are "NECESSARY" nutrients. The North American diet is highly deficient in "essential fatty acids" (the GOOD fats 3,6,& 9) due to our high intake of animal fats, hydrogenated fats, & high consumption of processed foods.
